  1. Reliability and survival analysis, without life data. I.e., ships (installed base, production, sales, births, and so on) and returns (complaints, failures, repairs, deaths, and even spares sales) counts are statistically sufficient to make nonparametric estimates of reliability and (actuarial) failure rate functions.
  2. Optimal opportunistic maintenance;
    e.g. 1, as long as we're fixing part A, what else should we do while system is torn down to level of part A?
    e.g. 2, as long as we're replacing something, which replacement part should we install: new, 1000 hours old, 5000 hours old?
  3. Optimal diagnostics:
    e.g. 1 Shotgun: in what order should we replace parts to see whether replacement fixes the problem
    e.g. 2 FTDOTS: Fault Tree Diagnostics and Optimal Test Sequence
    e.g. 3 FMERD: Failure Modes and Effects Risk Diagnostics
  4. Actuarial forecasts, demand estimation, spares stocks, and so on
  5. Operations research applications
